Elysian Mortar Teams


Mortars are great in 8th edition for the amount of firepower they put out compared to their points cost, and the Elysian ones are no exception so I want quite a few of these, and as they come in packs of 3 that is not hard to achieve. In fact at this moment since the chapter approved changes an Elyian 3 man mortar squad is cheaper than the Astra Militarum equivalent, but I don't expect it to remain this way for long with the rapid pace of GW updates.

The mortar squad can be assembled in a carrying position, or a firing position. The kit has parts for 1 of the carrying pose, and 2 of the firing pose.

I assembled a squad in the carrying pose first, and I am not happy with this pose. Assembly took a significant amount of time, and due to only 2 points of contact with the base for the entire squad and mortar it isn't very stable. Also the hands had to be fit and glued into the mortar handles, and the whole thing didn't come out as neat as I would have liked.




So from there I decided to assemble the rest in the firing position which was a lot easier, although I had to use some leg and arm bits from other kits.




I liked this pose a lot better, and put the spare ammo canister on the base for aesthetics.

Note I haven't finished these yet, I will go back later and attach pouches and other equipment to the models, as well as grav shutes. I'll probably equip the whole army with grav shutes as I feel that further distinguishes the models from the more common guard models. Except the missile launcher guys as the model firing the missile launcher will not fit a grav shute.

Anyway in other news I got back my commission painted and assembled Sky Talon yesterday so that will be my next post.

Elysian Tactics - Tauros Assault vehicle and Tauros Venator

In my opinion the most iconic model of the Elysians is the Tauros. The Tauros comes in 2 variants, the 2 axle Assault Tauros, and the larger 3 axle Venator. Interestingly enough though, these have the <Regiment> keyword as opposed to the Elysian Drop Troops keyword, so can easily be included in any other regiment and some of the Regimental doctrines could prove useful for Tauroses. However I will be covering the Tauros in the context of an Elysian force, meaning they gain the Aerial Drop ability. The first thing that hit me about these models is how physically small they are, being not much taller than an infantry model. Tactics wise this will mean they can gain cover much easier, and with their high movement can easily dart from cover to cover. And both variants also have the galvanic motor special rule giving them a 5+ Invul save if they move over 10" in their last movement phase which is easy to do even if they end up in the same location by doing a loop. Tauros Assault Vehicle

Tauros Assault Vehicle Since I covered the Venators last post I thought I would move on to the Assault version of the Tauros now I have assembeled 4 of these so far and the process is very similar to the Venators with many of the pieces being identical. The four I have assembeled so far I have equipped with the Heavy Flamer as that is how I am currently planning to use them. I looked into magnetising them, but it is not a simple process as both weapon options have different ammo packs on the seats, and the grenade launcher seems to be less useful than the Heavy Flamer on such a fast vehicle. Although if I get some more I will probably make some into the grenade Launcher version. As you can see one of them is a different colour than the rest, This one is from a different source was was of a lesser quality than the others, which is why I have ordered more of them.
